Worktop Prices

How much you will spend

This is the question that everyone wants to know. This is because it is a very difficult question to answer. Pricing for countertops is complicated since there are many factors at work and the impact of these factors on the final price will vary depending on what material your worktop is made from. Granite worktops have a relatively high material cost but also require extensive transportation considerations.

Discount or thin cut granite slabs will sell for $35-$50 per square foot. Mid range granite will cost between $60-$100 per square foot and high end, rare or figured granite can cost anywhere from $125 up to $500 per square foot. Unfortunately this information is not enough for the average consumer to estimate installation costs.

There is appreciable loss when installing granite countertops and the installation of bevelled edges, backsplashes, cuts, sealer and gloss are not included in this type of estimate and this will easily account for 50% of the total finished costs. In order to determine effective cross price comparison the following numbers are based on actual contractor quotes for a simple L shaped kitchen counter. The counter had one corner as well as two cutouts required - one for the sink and one for the range top unit. The total area of the counter was 35 square feet.
